I strongly condemn the recent personal attacks by the Daily Mail on the three judges who ruled on the Article 50 last Thursday (see front page below).
We have a free press and they have an important & critical role in our society but in this case the Daily Mail has attacked one of the corner stones of a free society, the integrity of the judicial process by attacking the judges as people not just their decision. The next time a judge makes a controversial decision they should not have to fear journalists raking over their past. If the Daily Mail had objected to the ruling and explained why they considered it wrong they would have been doing their job but to personally attack the judges and in particular to make references to the sexuality of one of them (even though it was later removed) is unacceptable. It demeans & damages British society. I also believe the government should have been quicker to respond although I welcome Liz Truss's statement I think they should have done more, one reason for writing this. Since I believe in a free press I do not want to censure the Daily Mail but this is another reason why I would never buy the Daily Mail. I am half-German and my German grandparents while not Nazi's would have come from that part of German society that would have supported them and Hitler in the 1930's. But it always mystified me why they did it. But in the last few years I have understand better how the press can be used to create fear & division. The judges are not the enemies of the people but the defenders of the law which protects us all.
